Cycle Derby's Bold New Ambition for 2025!

The huge benefits of children learning to cycle are undeniable - it is a life skill helping with everything from developing greater confidence and independence, to improving physical and mental health, impacting positively upon society, community, the economy and the environment.

Nationally it is recognised that an incredible 36% of children up to the age of 11 have never even been on a bike. In Derby, from our experience working within schools, we find this number to be even higher.

The Department for Transport have recently stated that the best way to give Year 6 pupils the skills and confidence to ride to secondary school is by providing Bikeability Level 2 training (this teaches children how to ride a bike safely and confidently on quieter roads).

However, based on the statistics above, there are a significant number of children who have not yet learned to ride a bike, making access to Bikeability 2 training impossible.

This is why the team at Cycle Derby have decided to make a bold and ambitious commitment to the city of Derby. We promise to teach every child in primary education, whatever their ability, the fundamental life skill of learning to cycle before they leave for secondary school.

This is a fully inclusive commitment that will ensure all children will learn to ride on a cycle appropriate for them.

We have already contacted all public and independent schools in Derby City and will work alongside them to deliver Learn to Ride to all children that need it.

We believe this is a groundbreaking and unique offer building on the skills, confidence and most importantly, the fun of being active through cycling. An offer that will have a real impact, not only on the number of children participating in Bikeability Level 2 across the city, but on their mindset and attitudes towards regular participation in physical activity that will last a lifetime.
